Matt Carkner, New York Islanders
05 | 14
Matt is currently on a 2-year deal as a player-coach with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. The previous 6 years, he secured himself a spot in the NHL with the New York Islanders and the Ottawa Senators, playing 3 years with each team. Prior to that, he made a lot of memories with various AHL teams.
Ottawa is close to his hometown, Morewood, ON, Canada where he grew up and married his high school sweetheart, Kary. Together they have 2 boys, Chase and Corbin, who are also avid athletes.
Matt has been lucky enough to have very inspirational people in his life, teaching him to be grateful and give back to his community when he can. It was with the Ottawa Senators that Matt first became involved with Special Hockey and to this day he has not looked back. Matt has continued his work with ASHA with the Long Island Blues and the Southern Connecticut Storm programs. All his time and efforts have not gone unrecognized. He has won several awards including, AHL Man of the Year, AHL Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, and the ASHA Inspiration Award.
When not at the rink, he can be found at the movies, on the ball field, or playing PS3 with his boys. He is a big believer of quality family time. He loves being outside BBQing, fishing, golfing, and taking care of the 'Honey Do List'. He loves a home-cooked meal, but also enjoys traveling and getting away with his wife and kids.
Matt has been involved with several charitable organizations such as the American Special Hockey Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Capital City Condors, The Carkinator and many school related fundraisers. He influences others to join him. Several of his teammates have resumed Matt's role, or started a new charity of their own.
Any team would be lucky to have him on the roster, and any player would benefit having him as their coach. He is living proof that "HARD WORK PAYS OFF!"
